THE BURROW
“I have completed the construction of my burrow and it seems to be successful”, with these words begins Franz Kafka’s labyrinthine tale of a creature that has dug itself an underground world of tunnels, shelters, and security mechanisms. For the creature, the silence of the burrow is the most beautiful thing. But one day it is broken: an uncanny sound shakes the burrow.
Kafka’s unfinished story The Burrow is the starting point for a filmic theatre performance at the Zentralwäscherei. It speaks of the longing for safety, the fear of the unknown, and the retreat into the private sphere. Between architectural motifs and urban reality, a feverish evening emerges, asking: What is built—and what remains excluded?
