On August 3, 2014, the so-called "Islamic State" invaded the Shengal region in northern Iraq. Thousands of Yazidis were brutally murdered, abducted, or forced to flee, while religious and cultural sites were destroyed. The UN has classified these atrocities as the first genocide of the 21st century. Yazidis refer to this genocide as "Ferman 74," reflecting the long history of pogroms against them, with 74 recorded since the 15th century.

This genocide also constituted a targeted femicide. Yazidi women were killed and raped by ISIS fighters, and approximately 7,000 women and girls were abducted and exploited as slaves. Although many of them have since been freed, around 2,700 remain in captivity or are still missing. In the face of this violence, Yazidi women have mounted strong resistance. Today, they play a central role in building new societal structures in Shengal and are engaged in an international fight for justice and remembrance.
