Imagine it's Friday evening (May 24th to be precise), a balmy spring night. You walk aimlessly through the city until you reach an old laundry. Lights are on in the windows, you can hear a piano, hysterical laughter. You turn in and make your way past a few strange figures. A guy they call "Mackie" flicks a cigarette butt in your direction. You dodge it and enter the small bar. Cozy light spills towards you, a few people are sitting at the tables, laughing, whispering. A guy with a gap in his teeth gives you a covert look. The barmaid gives you a strange look (what's she smiling about?). You ask what's going on here today. She says "N' Liederabend" and throws her dishcloth, which she was just using to polish glasses, over her shoulder. "A what?" "N'Liederabend", she points to the small stage, and there is a man in a top hat sitting at the piano playing a few bars from the opera "Carmen". Someone closes the window so you can hear the sound of the sea and the seagulls less loudly. A woman clad in sequins enters the stage, stands at the microphone and begins...
