Housing is much more than a private matter. It reflects how societies deal with the climate crisis and social inequalities. More and more people are losing their homes and being pushed to the outskirts of cities. Is building more really the solution? The construction industry is one of the most climate-damaging sectors of the economy. In addition, ecological and social issues are often played off against each other. Under the pretext that new buildings are more ecological than renovating existing houses, rents can apparently be increased legitimately.
Can the housing crisis be solved ecologically and socially? And what would that have to do with property ownership?
We will discuss this question with social geographers Dr. Hanna Hilbrandt, Ismene Ehrler, and Nouri Abdelgadir, as well as activists from the climate movement.
