Zurich: Crash Course Climate Crisis 1 - Energy Question and Fossil Counteroffensive
Since last fall at the latest, the question of energy supply has also been on the political agenda in Switzerland. However, it is not ecological considerations but the increased energy prices that have led to discussions in society about energy-saving measures. The left-wing parties are focusing (so far unsuccessfully) on the expansion of renewable energy sources, without, however, criticizing the capitalist growth logic that underlies the rising consumption of resources. The bourgeois parties have completely discarded the green cloak they donned on the occasion of the 2019 climate elections. Not only are they calling for a renaissance of nuclear power, but they are also promoting the expansion of fossil infrastructure, as the examples of the gas-fired power plant in Birr (realized) and the Liquefied Natural Gas terminal in Schweizerhalle (not realized) show.
In a heatwave summer where every gram of CO² more in the atmosphere is too much, the phase-out of fossil fuels in Europe and around the world is progressing far too slowly. On September 25, 2023, we want to discuss together whether we really need to consume so much energy and if so, whether there are no alternatives to the fossil-fuelled dirty guns? If we want to prevent the collapse of our climate system, we must succeed in phasing out fossil fuels.
With the activists Dr. Eva Gelinsky and Jonas Kampus we will discuss how we should deal with energy in the future. Finally, there will be a quiz on this topic.
