On the last weekend of June, ZW will welcome Fog, a collective from Basel that thrives on pushing the boundaries of sound and music. They will present three different pieces.
Hildebrand/Ten
“Be water, my friend”
Music, just like water, can flow or it can destroy. Music is, just like water, intangible and constantly changes its form. With this concept begins the music of Hildebrand/Ten, a duo consisting of Jules Hildebrand, a producer of electronic music, and Masha Ten, a violinist. Inspired by early music, noise experiments and traditional music, they combine organic and modular soundscapes with sometimes heavily distorted, sometimes natural-sounding violin phrases. The music conveys a story, just like water, flowing and crashing. But what is this story about? It consists of fragments, of many individual waves that collected into a mass remains formless until someone hears it. The music tells of conflict, loneliness of being without a home. It also tells of moments of love and reconciliation. Of violence, its dissolution, and of its insignificance.
Delprat/Maqueda
„future_S”
𝕗𝕦𝕥𝕦𝕣𝕖_𝕊' is intended to be the music of our present that in the past was conceived as thinking about the future. It serves as a reflection of the hauntology concept, delving into the influence of the past on the present. As they perform, the composition becomes the ‘present,’ with an eye on the future sounds they are crafting.
Visuals by Charlotte Martin seamlessly interlace with the auditory journey, offering glitchy, distorted, and fragmented images that mirror sonic elements. They explore uncharted territories of video effects, experimenting with datamoshing, pixelation, and color manipulation, weaving archival footage, abstract imagery, and subtle nods to bygone musical eras.
FOG
HUMAN DRUM MACHINE is a unique piece that merges elements of experimental electronic dance music with a chamber music-like approach. By utilizing drum machines and computers, the piece showcases the potential of electronic music when performed by a quartet. This combination allows the music to transcend traditional boundaries, moving beyond the typical club setting. This piece serves as a testament to the endless possibilities of musical experimentation and the power of collaboration.
