"Now What? / What If? — In Conversation with Martin Hofer

What role and responsibility do architects have today?

On 07/02/24, starting at 7:00 PM, we will discuss in the next edition of "What If...?" at the Zentralwäscherei what it means to practice architecture today. What responsibilities does the profession bear, and what challenges and limitations need to be considered?

Together with Martin Hofer, we will critically reflect on perspectives on architecture, the real estate industry, and their societal significance, placing them in the context of current working conditions and the critical capitalistic realm. We will also discuss the legal framework that shapes our built environment. What changes are necessary, and how can architects contribute to their development? Money vs. Ethics: How does the demand for fair compensation for one's work relate to the question of the projects one can still (or no longer) undertake today?

Moderation: Angelika Hinterbrandner, who sees herself as a mediator, dedicated to bridging gaps between diverse groups and communities. Her belief in the importance of bringing people together to exchange ideas and collaborate on projects underscores her commitment to fostering positive change. With an ultimate goal of creating spaces and structures that facilitate learning, connection, and collaborative work, she envisions a better future for everyone through her efforts. In 2022, she co-initiated spaceforfuture.org with five other individuals from the fields of architecture, urbanism, research, and communication. The initiative, led by a collective effort, passionately advocates for affordable, sustainable, and equitable access to housing for the 99%. Through her involvement, she actively contributes to the initiative's mission of creating a positive impact on housing accessibility and fostering a more inclusive future.

The event will be conducted in German. We look forward to critical thoughts and a lively discussion! Join us.
